Valarie is a co-founder of the much-acclaimed Multicultural Children’s Book Day– a special event that celebrates diversity in children’s literature. Our mission is to not only raise awareness for the kid’s books that celebrate diversity but to get more of these of books into classrooms and libraries. Teaming up with fellow mom and diversity advocate, Mia Wenjen from Pragmatic Mom, Valarie worked to create an ambitious (and much needed) national event. January 27th, 2014 Jump into a Book and Pragmatic Mom presented the first ever Multicultural Children’s Book Day: Celebrating Diversity in Children’s Books that included four major sponsors, over seventy review bloggers and thousands of readers. Five years later, this non-profit is going global and the 2018 event garnered over 3 billion social media share impressions. When not reading, writing or publishing, Valarie is a reading mentor, a children’s play and reading advocate, Suzuki piano teacher, photographer, traveler and a lifelong learner.families, and also Audrey Press-an independent book publishing house. Valarie lives in the foothills of the Smoky Mountains in Tennessee with her husband and three children.
