Multicultural Children’s Book Day 2021

January 24, 2021 by Valarie Leave a Comment

I am so excited just as I am every year for Multicultural Children’s Book Day. This year will be our 8th celebration. I cannot believe this much time has gone by.

Multicultural Children’s Book Day is a non-profit diversity in children’s literature initiative dedicated to getting books into the hands of readers.

For our 2021 on and offline celebration, we are proud to announce that there are 25 CoHosts and Global Cohosts, 24 Medallion, and 36 Author Level Sponsors supporting this initiative

Thanks to over 700 dedicated book reviewers, 1400-1500+ diverse book reviews will be shared on social media during the last few weeks of January, and to date, MCBD has gifted over 9,000 diverse books to classrooms.

When we started, only 7% of all children’s books published reflected a diverse or multicultural viewpoint for a reading population of 47% who were diverse or from multicultural backgrounds.

Throughout the years we have seen the awareness grow where children are seeing themselves in the pages of the books they are reading. Relating to authors who reflect their viewpoints and life experiences as well as growing readers who do not come from these cultures or diverse lives.

Songwriter and singer Annie Bird, who has written the most amazing Multicultural Children’s Book Day song, recently sent us an email stating that one day, hopefully, our book holiday will no longer be needed because we will be living in an accepting and inclusive world.

THAT has become my new life goal, that every child and family can find themselves in the pages of the books they read and that all of us are included and woven into our co-created lives and world at large.

Here’s What’s Going On and I Really Want You To Come!

Multicultural Children’s Book Day  2021 (1/29/21) is in its 8th year! This non-profit children’s literacy initiative was founded by Valarie Budayr and Mia Wenjen; two diverse book-loving moms who saw a need to shine the spotlight on all of the multicultural books and authors on the market while also working to get those book into the hands of young readers and educators.
Eight years in, MCBD’s mission is to raise awareness of the ongoing need to include kids’ books that celebrate diversity in homes and school bookshelves continues. Read about our Mission & History HERE.

My pre-New Year prep always included choosing a “word.” ONE WORD. A word that will be my theme as I create my aspirations over the next 12 months.

But since 2020 was such a challenging year for all of us the constant extreme of highs and lows didn’t feel healthy to recap in my “well-crafted newsletter.” Nor did I do my annual review. Not that 2020 was a bust–quite the opposite! Over the course of the last 10+ months, everything had changed and it felt more like focusing on surviving instead of thriving.

I even didn’t want to pick a new word for the next year. ONE solitary word felt like such an effort for my already muddled brain.

But I also realized as I looked back on 2020, that I had unearthed the wisdom and peace of simply being. Being in the only moment I have which is now. Click my Linkin.bio to find out why my word of the year is onion!!

Yesterday while I was at @elmontesagrado.taos I di Yesterday while I was at @elmontesagrado.taos I discovered a treasure in the ceiling. This is not a lightbulb in the first photo but a quartz crystal. It’s huge!!! The entryway is gorgeous with a beautiful amethyst next to the fireplace. When you stand in the middle of a stone circle in the foyer floor, and look up, you can see the quartz crystal reflected in the glass balustrade above. I absolutely love interactive architecture. Also look at the reflection of the quartz crystal on the walls. During certain times of day, the entire foyer looks like sparkling stars in the whole room!!! #architecture #architecturelovers #taos #newmexico #newmexicotrue
Yesterday I had a wonderful journey to Taos to con Yesterday I had a wonderful journey to Taos to continue to craft and co-create an upcoming tour called Eat, Pray, Love, a 3 Day Wellness Journey. For two nights we will sleep under the protection of the Sacred Mountain of Taos as we stay at El Monte Sagrado Resort @elmontesagrado.taos. Our focus on the tour is to connect to our own individual center, weaving elements that awaken, connect, and enliven the soul.

Stay tuned as I share more detail as it unfolds. This woman led tour by Angelisa @taoschic, Ilona @Ilon.mercedes, Zaina Budayr @_yogaplant , and myself happens this year. Once in June and again in September. We will be exploring Georgia O’Keeffe Country, then up to the Taos plateau, and back to Santa Fe taking the High Road to Chimayo.

We will be grounding, seeding intentions, learning from our indigenous cultures and natural wonders of Northern New Mexico. #travel #mindfultravel #followyourarrow #bestill

A moment of calm in the middle of the storm. Last A moment of calm in the middle of the storm. Last Week, actually on Multicultural Children's Book Day, I took a winter spin on this creatively designed labyrinth. Though it is a usual classical design, it is made out of little wood stumps with a beautiful ceremonial center created by those who walk it.
Winter has had its way. The leaves give it great character as does the fallen wood blocks. It is imperfectly beautiful. At the moment of this walking, I too was imperfectly beautiful needing a moment of repose.
Even though its in the center of Santa Fe, it's a quite corner to practice centering, solitude, and slowness.

What a beautiful book! The Waldorf Homeschool Handbook has given me much food for thought by reading it. I love it and even though we have already been homeschooling for almost 8 years now with children in highschool, it has been wonderfully refreshing and has encouraged me to relook at how we go about our homeschooling journey.
