The Threads that Bind Us: Mending the Weave

January 18, 2021 by Valarie Leave a Comment

About a year ago I took a drum journey to visit the Norns, yes the three Giant sisters of Norse Cosmology, Urdr, Verdandi, and Skuld. The reason for my journey was simple, I needed to see where there are/were gaps in my family’s weave so I could help bring healing by mending our weave and weft, the fabric that makes us a family, both past and present.

It became apparent as I watch the next generation grow and function as adults that they are carrying on many of the same patterns that my generation has graciously embraced by those who raised us. I’ve spent the last two years doing intensive ancestral healing work so that the next generation and those that follow can use new patterns and the toxic dysfunctional ones can be laid to rest.

I approached the eldest Norn sister, Urdr, and conversed with her about why I had come. She smiled and reached into her well. Reaching for a nearly invisible microfilament of light. She pulled and spun the light into thread. Handing me a spindle full of light thread, she said, “As much as you need but not more. She tilted her head towards her sister Verdandi.

As Verdandi took the thread it solidified into a variegated golden yarn. She pointed for me to turn around. Behind I could see my ancestors. Some recent, many unknown. They kept going back, hundreds of people, thousands of people. In between some, there would be shadows or gaps consisting of several people. Handing me the thread, Verdandi told me to tie the end around my waist tightly and to give the ball of thread to my mother who would start to pass it down the line. I watched as the thread moved until it came to a place which was blank or in shadow. I sang until the thread mended the space and handed itself off to the next ancestor. We continued, my ancestors and I, to reweave the broken threads, to mend the gaps in our weave.

Towards the end of the journey, two female ancestors took the end of the woven fabric and wrapped it around my shoulders. I could feel everyone’s embrace, support, and security.

In Norse cosmology, this is called Ørlog. This is my thread in the Web of Wyrd that I weave with through the choices I make. The Norns weave, spin, and create a huge web called the Web of Wyrd. These are the threads of fate that I have no control over. Ørlog is the thread(s) that I use and choose to weave inside my “neighborhood” in the Web of Wyrd with the Norns. I cannot reweave the past. I can only start in the present moment and weave or mend forward.

Shortly after this journey, I found myself in a yarn store and there was a thread which reminded me of the variegated golden thread I started to re-weave my family fabric with. As I would weave the colors would change. I felt an urge and guidance to take this yarn and knit an ancestor cloak.

Throughout our time with Covid-19, I have knit with my ancestors making this cloak. I have recently finished with it and wore it for the first time during the Wild Hunt in October. Daily throughout the year, I remember my ancestors but they are so present in my activities during the month of November. It has been so fitting to be wrapped in my ancestors during this month of honoring them.

What are you choosing to do with your thread? What are you weaving into your life these days?

My pre-New Year prep always included choosing a “word.” ONE WORD. A word that will be my theme as I create my aspirations over the next 12 months.

But since 2020 was such a challenging year for all of us the constant extreme of highs and lows didn’t feel healthy to recap in my “well-crafted newsletter.” Nor did I do my annual review. Not that 2020 was a bust–quite the opposite! Over the course of the last 10+ months, everything had changed and it felt more like focusing on surviving instead of thriving.

I even didn’t want to pick a new word for the next year. ONE solitary word felt like such an effort for my already muddled brain.

But I also realized as I looked back on 2020, that I had unearthed the wisdom and peace of simply being. Being in the only moment I have which is now. Click my Linkin.bio to find out why my word of the year is onion!!

Yesterday while I was at @elmontesagrado.taos I di Yesterday while I was at @elmontesagrado.taos I discovered a treasure in the ceiling. This is not a lightbulb in the first photo but a quartz crystal. It’s huge!!! The entryway is gorgeous with a beautiful amethyst next to the fireplace. When you stand in the middle of a stone circle in the foyer floor, and look up, you can see the quartz crystal reflected in the glass balustrade above. I absolutely love interactive architecture. Also look at the reflection of the quartz crystal on the walls. During certain times of day, the entire foyer looks like sparkling stars in the whole room!!! #architecture #architecturelovers #taos #newmexico #newmexicotrue
Yesterday I had a wonderful journey to Taos to con Yesterday I had a wonderful journey to Taos to continue to craft and co-create an upcoming tour called Eat, Pray, Love, a 3 Day Wellness Journey. For two nights we will sleep under the protection of the Sacred Mountain of Taos as we stay at El Monte Sagrado Resort @elmontesagrado.taos. Our focus on the tour is to connect to our own individual center, weaving elements that awaken, connect, and enliven the soul.

Stay tuned as I share more detail as it unfolds. This woman led tour by Angelisa @taoschic, Ilona @Ilon.mercedes, Zaina Budayr @_yogaplant , and myself happens this year. Once in June and again in September. We will be exploring Georgia O’Keeffe Country, then up to the Taos plateau, and back to Santa Fe taking the High Road to Chimayo.

We will be grounding, seeding intentions, learning from our indigenous cultures and natural wonders of Northern New Mexico. #travel #mindfultravel #followyourarrow #bestill

A moment of calm in the middle of the storm. Last A moment of calm in the middle of the storm. Last Week, actually on Multicultural Children's Book Day, I took a winter spin on this creatively designed labyrinth. Though it is a usual classical design, it is made out of little wood stumps with a beautiful ceremonial center created by those who walk it.
Winter has had its way. The leaves give it great character as does the fallen wood blocks. It is imperfectly beautiful. At the moment of this walking, I too was imperfectly beautiful needing a moment of repose.
Even though its in the center of Santa Fe, it's a quite corner to practice centering, solitude, and slowness.

I love it and even though we have already been homeschooling for almost 8 years now with children in highschool, it has been wonderfully refreshing and has encouraged me to relook at how we go about our homeschooling journey.
