Earth Teach Me Quiet

Recently I discovered the most beautiful choral piece which stopped me in my tracks.

The harmonies, the choice of instruments, i.e. marimba and water glasses, gave me no choice but to stop what I was doing, and move into the stillness of listening.

Deep Listening

The words from the Ute Nation, an invocation to the Earth, our Mother, uses metaphors to lead us gently through our humanness.

“Earth teach me to remember kindness as dry fields weep with rain.”

During this time of great difficulty and challenges, these words, embracing the heart and mind give the gift of stillness laced with great wisdom.

Earth teach me quiet – as the grasses are still with light.
Earth teach me suffering – as old stones suffer with memory.
Earth teach me humility – as blossoms are humble with beginning.
Earth teach me caring – as mothers nurture their young.
Earth teach me courage – as the tree that stands alone.
Earth teach me limitation – as the ant that crawls on the ground.
Earth teach me freedom – as the eagle that soars in the sky.
Earth teach me acceptance – as the leaves that die each fall.
Earth teach me renewal – as the seed that rises in the spring.
Earth teach me to forget myself – as the melted snow forgets its life.
Earth teach me to remember kindness – as dry fields weep with rain.

Latvian Composer Ēriks Ešenvalds Ode to the Earth is beautifully sung by The Crossing.

I share it with you here that it may give you a momentary pause and know that we will get through this.

“Earth teach me courage-as the tree that stands alone.”
